Scenic Train Ride on the Gornergrat Bahn

The Gornergrat Bahn departs from Zermatt village. It opened in 1898 as Switzerland’s first electric cogwheel train and runs 365 days a year. Better yet, it’s eco-friendly by generating electricity during each descent to help power the next journey to the top.

Here’s a tip: sit on the right side for the best views!

The train climbs 1469 meters along the 9.4km route, passing bridges, tunnels, forests, and mountain lakes. You finally reach Gornergrat, the fifth and final station, in just 33 minutes.

History of Gornergrat Station & the Railway

The Gornergrat Railway opened in 1898 after a train line was built between the nearby Visp and the town of Zermatt. It was built as an eco-friendly electrified railway meaning that the braking system saves energy on the descent. Every 3 downhill trips generates the electricity for 1 to 2 uphill trips.

The train runs year round, but was originally only open in the summer. The lower section started running year round in 1929, and the summit went year round in 1941.

The Gornergrat Railway is the second highest railway in Europe (it was the highest at the time it was built) and is still the highest open-air cog railway in Europe.

Highlights in the midst of nature on the Gornergrat

The Gornergrat train climbs through various natural vegetational zones, as it rises from 1,600 metres to 3,100 metres above sea level. Starting through the Arven forest on the Riffelalp and then over alpine meadows on the Riffelberg. The higher the train climbs the more the vegetation disappears and finally you enter a barren world of rocks and stones when you arrive at 3,100 metres above sea level. Ahead of you are summits of over 4,000 metres and Switzerland’s third largest glacier.

Well-structured hiking trails connect walkers to the mountain in summer. In winter there is the fun sled run from Rotenboden to Riffelberg – just one of the many great things to do.
