Star Citizen: A Deep Dive into the Drug Trade
Source: ytimg.com
"A life without risks, is a life not worth living." – This, to me, perfectly describes the allure of Star Citizen. Not the gameplay (which, well, we'll get to), but the potential story, and how people might create it. One of the most engaging bits of the universe that seem very relevant, almost eerily relatable, is the pervasive drug trade.
Understanding the System
What are Drugs in Star Citizen?

Drugs, in Star Citizen's vast expanse, are (for the purposes of this discussion) items that are highly sought after. There's no detailed in-depth narrative (yet?), and some players seem confused about it, but generally, there's trade in those "resources", and the value drives some amazing activities, creating complex business (read almost like real-life!).
- Some are seemingly legal and valuable.
- Others could be very illegal.
- Lots of other kinds exist…
A New Era of Criminality
We've all seen (or at least heard about) films like The Godfather. This isn't a movie. Yet, it kind of resembles the reality. The criminal aspect feels, to me, a fundamental part of Star Citizen's concept. In the void between space, ships and their actions can potentially go unchecked or poorly monitored.
Questions That Spark Ideas:
- Where are these drugs coming from?
- How are they distributed?
- What is the level of security against those that don't like the process? (important aspect!).
- Why are they even valuable?

The Players and Their Interests
You might have a legal transporter or smuggler. Perhaps a space pirate with its own objectives? It is just the nature of human nature that there will always be risks associated with such deals.
Different Parties and Their Motivations
- The Suppliers: A planet somewhere in a system far away from anything else has potential crops of raw material.
- The Middlemen: Some corporation, like a delivery service… probably quite unethical! (My personal theory!)
- The Consumers: From space explorers or just people in need or seeking high value? What's their actual need? (Makes one question a lot of human behaviour)
Market Dynamics and Impact
Pricing, Demand, and Supply
Drugs are not cheap and seemingly there is no way to produce something out of thin air…so, that creates prices. The need dictates demand, the process dictate availability. But if no one wants it, the value falls, just like (well, like stocks on Earth, you know?.)
- Different prices on the markets or specific orders will be seen in the marketplace (I think.).
- Limited supplies boost pricing.
- Excess in the markets creates low value!
Impact on the Citizen Economy
These substances are part of an ever changing market, causing many people to act on this ever changing environment (which isn't that different from our real one, frankly!).
- Potential Wealth: For example, some may profit considerably from transporting drugs in an efficient way (or create a lot of chaos in the marketplace!).
- Potential Problems: On the other hand, it's fair to imagine those against such dealings or those harmed may react badly, too.
Exploration, Risks, and Beyond
Exploration of Possible Stories
Star Citizen, like many games these days, isn't only for fun and engagement but opens up scenarios that would (with very little adjustments) happen in reality.
- Criminal Careers: Creating your character and their reasons could mean doing this kind of activity. What do you think would happen?
- Ethical Dilemmas: Is it okay? Or is that unethical or illegal? That is up for each player to think over!

Hidden Potential in Risk Taking
There's a lot to explore with the use of substances and risks that can develop from it!
- High reward… but huge risk, which is in itself valuable as a game element (I think!).
Reviews from Players: (A taste)
- "Makes the universe come to life". – Player Alex
- "Is this the beginning of my favourite story? Time will tell…". – Player Anya
- "Some things I dislike in-game is the repetition (of the gameplay in general)…", – Player Mark

Personal Review (My Own Thoughts)
As I dive deeper into this drug phenomenon within Star Citizen, it seems to reflect a reality I understand. What's not clear yet, to me, is what makes these goods stand out among other trade, other businesses in this universe. My view might be inaccurate but this seems vital for the creation of great roleplay.
- How does it relate to general trade routes?
- Are there limits?
